The load effect combination problem for snow and wind actions on building structures is studied in soem detail. The purpose of the study is verification of simple combination rules that are implemented in standard design codes like the Eurocode 1: 'Basis of Design and Actions on Structures' (EUROCODE 1 1994) and the ISO/FDIS 2394: 'General principles on reliability for structures' (ISO/FDIS 2394 1998). Combination rules for both the ultimate limit state as well as the serviceability limit state is considered. The verification work is carried out by using two differnet approaches. A simplified mehtod based on Ferry Borges-Castanheta's model is used and complemented by a more exact method that is based on an estiamte of the average level upcrossing rate of the combined process. This allows a fairly accurate estiamte of the extreme value distribution of the combined process which provides a means of testing the accuracy of the two more simple approaches. This will be done for a suitable array of test cases.
