Temporary scaffolds covered with plastic sheets often collapse in strong winds during construction, injuring and killing people. This study analyzes the reliability of he scaffolding structural system exposed to wind loads. The reliability of the scaffolds was calculated by modeling the scaffolds as combinations of series and parallel systems utilizing the first-order reliability method (FORM). In this study, collapse mechanisms of actual accidents involving typical scaffolds are examined. The results show that the scaffolds designed according to the ordinary design code procedure sometimes have low reliability under strong winds, which may have led to the accidents.
