A closed-loop oxygen generation system that utilizes only carbon dioxide and electricity to generate oxygen is desirable for long-term human space exploration. In this paper we evaluated the feasibilities of using a solid oxide electrolysis (SOE) stack in the closed-loop oxygen generation system to decompose water vapor from a Bosch reactor, generating oxygen required by the crewmembers and hydrogen for sustaining the Bosch reaction. The efficiency, performance, operating conditions, and design considerations for the SOE stack used for closed loop oxygen generation are discussed in this paper.
