Application of human factors principals and findings to the highway environment can greatly increase the safety and efficiency of the system for all users. In order for human factors finding to be incorporated into highway designs, the products must be configured to assure their usability by the engineers who are responsible for final design decisions. The importance of usable products and carefully configured implementation strategies cannot be underestimated by human factors-highway safety researchers.The human factors groups at the FHWA, in conjunction with the engineering community, has developed and is implementing an ambitious program to assure that the findings can be applied. Through analysis of user needs, and development of carefully considered products, important research findings will be applied so that the final goal of improving the safety and efficiency of out nation's highways can be achieved.
