Acetic acid is produced when Escherichia coli W3110 (pEC901) is cultivated in medium containing glucose. Acetic acid formation and its effects on cell growth and interferon production were investigated by using shake-flask and chemostat cultures. Acetic acid greatly inhibited cell growth and interferon production, when it was removed from the culture, cellular interferon content increased by more than threefold.
