Effects of kind of the binder and the amount used on the physical characteristics of the particles obtained in granulation were studied. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na), polyvinylpyrrolidone ( PVP- K30) and L-hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC-L) were investigated. Parameters related to flowability, particle size distribution and the wearability were determined with the granule particles prepared by incorparating varying amount of the binder into a fixed formula. It was found that the influence of kind of the binder on the quality of the granule was not very marked. However, the amount of the binder was a rather critical factor effecting the flowability of the granule. Good flowability is important for the avoidance of solid bridging of the granule in subsequent processing to get the final pharmaceutical product.
