PREPARATION OF HYDROPHILIC TALC POWDER BY DRY GRINDING

Room temperature grinding of talc with and without additives was conducted in a beads-mill tester and a rotator mixer in order to produce a hydrophilic fine talc powder. The grinding of talc without additives enables us to produce a hydrophilic talc powder. The hydrophilic characteristic is appeared within 6 hours grinding and is accelerated as the grinding progress. This may be due to the structural change caused by the grinding. The grinding of talc with Ca(OH)_2 is also able to produce easily hydrophilic talc powder. Furthermore, hydrophilic talc power is produced by the grinding with Na_2SO_4 or NaPO_3. It is deduced that the hydrophilic property is attributed to the coating of additives on the surface of talc particles.
