The residence time of particle in drop tube furnace (DTF) is an important parameter for chemical kinetics experiment and in reaction rate data processing. It will lead to wrong result, that the residence time of particle obtained from the assumption that gas flow in DTF is uniform distributed in cross-section or full-developed laminar and isothermal. In this paper, the numerical method was used to precisely calculate the velocity and temperature distribution of gas and the motion of particles, and was checked by the necessary experiment. The residence time of pulverized particle of coal char in DTF was modified and its combustion rate was correctly measured.
