As part of a new high-speed railway line in Germany, a twin-tube tunnel with a length of 8,200 m (26,900 ft) is designed and will be constructed adopting the drill and blast method. The two parallel tunnel tubes feature cross passages every 500 m (1,640 ft) and will be built concurrently with the excavations, starting from five different locations. Due to the fact that the excavation works will all take place at the same time, a circulating air system for the supply of fresh air will be used during the construction phase. This innovative method was found to lower the equipment installation costs and to minimize the electric power consumption during construction.
