Thermally driven sorption devices for heating and/or cooline can partly replace conventional cojpression refrigenators and heat pumps (1, 2, 3). It the demand profile and the boundary conditions are suitable, significant economical advantages can be achieved. Embedding such a sorption system in the infrastructure of the user can provide a variety of advantages: rational use of energy, covnering a wide range of heating and cooling demands (most of them simultaneously) and-as a consequence-a reasonable rentability of the device. Using coupled systems, coefficients of performance system is analysied consisting of an ammonia salt topping cycle using ammonia as refrigerant and a metal hydride bottoming cycle using hydrogen as refrigerant. The driving heat for the bottoming cycle is provided by the ammonia salt system.
