This paper describes the use of residence Time Distribution to study flows of combustion products in an industrial furnace equiped iwth either a jet burner or a flat flame burner. In the first part of this document,we define Residence Time Distribution (RTD).In the following sections,we explain how we can measrue RTD,we describe the tests performed and we finaly show the analysis.Three levels of anlaysis have clearly been shown. The simplest is based on the comparison between the transit time and the mean residence time and on the form of the curve.A more sophisticated one is the study of the area unde the curve. The lst level of analysis consists in seeking an association of ideal reactors with the same theoritical TRD as the experimental one.It provides information on the macro-characteristics of flows, such as the proportion of stagnant zones, short circuits, recycling etc.
