The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of submerged rigid vertical thin barriers on surface waves. Three barrier types are considered: the first type is a barrier that extends from above the water surface to some distance below, the second type is a barrier that extends from the seabed to below the waterline, and the third type is a barrier that totally submerged. In this paper, the composite boundary element method (Composite BEM) is formulated and applied to study the effects of submerged thin barriers, which are modeled as nonzero thickness bodies. The accuracy of the solution is demonstrated by comparing the numerical values with those obtained from experiments or other analytical solutions. Results, including the reflection and transmission coefficients of the three types of barriers for various wave conditions, are presented and discussed.
