Most traffic accidents these days are caused by human error. Because of this it is necessaryto come up with effective solutions to prevent accidents caused by a drop in the driver's levelof alertness. We have already reported on a system we developed that estimates accurately adriver's level of alertness and issues an alarm when necessary (1).This time, we researched the effective use of information on drivers' level of alertness, andhow this can improve safety. As a result of the study, we developed two systems. One is asystem that adjusts the timing of a headway distance warning according to the driver's state ofalertness. The other is a system that releases aroma when the driver's monotony is increasing, thus maintaining his/her alertness at an appropriate level. This paper describes these systemsand their effects.
