FACILITIES FOR EXOBIOLOGY RESEARCH: BIOPAN, EXPOSE, EXOBIOLOGY MULTI-USER FACILITY

Since the 1980's the ESA microgravity life sciences activities have supported exobiology research with development and utilisation of experiment platforms. Facilities have been designed to allow exposure of experiment samples such as biological organisms and organic molecules to free space environment in Earth orbit. 'BIOPAN' and 'EXPOSE' are ESA facilities presently being exploited and developed. The ESA medium-term strategy in exobiology research beyond Earth orbit aims at creating a platform to support the search for life on Mars by in-situ investigations. Studies have been carried out in order to define a preliminary concept of such an exobiology facility. Experiment proposals for all of these facilities have been received from the science community over the past years. The most recently received experiment proposals for the facility BIOPAN are presently being evaluated for their potential accommodation on the next orbital flight in 2002.
