Hydrogeological studies have been carried out to evaluate the impacts, prior to the reservoir impoundment, of water table oscillations on phreatic aquifer in influence areas surrounding hydroelectric dam reservoirs, to determine preventive, mitigative and corrective actions. These studies started out from the detection of environmental problems associated to land use and occupation (soil saturation, well walls collapse, settlings of structures, flooding of depression areas) in influential areas of several reservoirs installed in the decades of 1960, 70 and 80 in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. A brief history of the main cases is presented, as well as the studies of hydrogeological impacts concerning monitored reservoirs, taking as an example, the Brazilian case of Pereira Barreto city(Tres Irmaos hydroelectric reservoir), due to its special characteristics. Results of water table depth monitoring, before, during and after Tres Irmaos reservoir impoundment, are presented in this paper. All these studies are included in a regional monitoring and management plan of the environmental consequences of dam reservoir impoundment and operation, which is in progress.
