The School of Architecture and Allied Arts at the University of Oregon runs its own color print shop for students, faculty, and staff. This paper and poster provide details of its operation.We offer printing on a color laser printer and four large-format inkjet printers, between 24 and 42 inches wide.All printers are served through an AppleShare IP server, which will be upgraded to run OS X Server beginning in Fall 2002.All print jobs are placed on hold at the print server when they arrive. Customers can walk up to the Output Room window and see an on-screen PDF preview of their print jobs before the jobs are manually released to the printer by the Output Room operator.Print jobs are charged per page for the laser printer and per linear foot for the large-format printers. Since there was no computerized print charging system in place when the Output Room was created, customers buy paper punchcards in a variety of denominations from the bookstore. Holes are punched out on the cards to deduct valuefrom them. No cash is handled at the Output Room.The Output Room earns a small profit each year, despite charging about half the price that commercial copy shops charge for similar quality printing. Our color printing operations also subsidize free black and white laser printing in our computer labs, allowing us to avoid having to set up an expensive print tracking and charging system.
