LEARNING OBJECTS: RAISING STANDARDS OR RAISING QUESTIONS?

The elearning phenomenon has generated new concepts and terminology and learning objects are at the forefront of this change. These digital assets are challenging educators, trainers and particularly instructional designers to reassess what constitutes a concept, the 'size' of a 'chunk' or a learning object and what value these objects will have outside the learning unit for which they were originally designed. Standards and interoperability, the plug and play processes of elearning, are also major concerns. This paper looks at the issues surrounding the application of standards to learning objects and raises questions about the impact standards have on both content and instructional design.
