UPSs (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) with power ratings greater than 10 kVA most often use sealed lead-acid batteries to store energy for backup power. If AC-input power fails, the battery automatically supplies the UPS inverter, providing continuous and high-quality power to mission-critical applications such as telecom infrastructures, data centers and industrial processes. Even if battery energy-storage technology is competitive and reliable, it has drawbacks for backup times shorter than one minute True to its long tradition of innovation, MGE UPS SYSTEMS has assessed emerging energy-storage technologies to be in a position to provide their customers with solutions best suited to their needs. Two of these new technologies, flywheel systems and ultracapacitors, have reached maturity and can now be envisaged for use in industrial applications. This article reviews batteries and these new energy-storage technologies, presenting their relative merits for use in UPS systems. In particular, it presents recent work on the development and testing of UPSs using ultracapacitors for energy-storage. Performance and customer benefits are analysed. Particular attention is paid to the need for voltage balancing between ultracapacitors cells. Despite environmental and size constraints, batteries presently dominate in UPS applications due to their low cost and wide range of available backup times. However, ultracapacitors are developing very quickly and may soon offer a competitive and reliable alternative to batteries for short backup time needs.
