SUSTAINABLE ENERGY MANAGEMENT STRATEGY FOR THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY - Track G: Energy Management - Session G2: Energy Management Programs
Energy Resource Optimizers (ERO) developed and implemented an energy management strategy at one hotel that is part of a large group of hotels. Town Lodge Sandton Grayston was selected by City Lodge Hotels to pilot the development and implementation of a sustainable energy management program. This hotel was chosen due to its already high level of energy efficiency. The pilot involved: Installation of a check metering system, metering the main electrical supply, and water heating load. Optimisation of the operating procedures and the electricity consuming systems in the hotel without negatively affecting operational costs and customer service. Evaluation of current level of energy management effectiveness of the hotel management and development of an action plan for the implementation of the Sustainable Energy Management Strategy. Energy management workshop with heads of departments (HOD) and staff to: educate them on electricity tariffs, costs, consumption; identify energy conservation measures; understand current practices, policies and procedures and its impact on energy consumption; Establish energy coordinating committee and assist with monthly meetings. The pilot ran over three months but due to the festive season December and January were included. September was the "base month". The consumption information and occupancy during this month was carefully documented and used as baseline against which all interventions were to be measured. At the end of January the impact of the implementation of the Sustainable Energy Management Strategy was a reduction of 17% in the hotels energy consumption. In order to test the sustainability an analysis was done in Feb 2010 and Feb 2011. The savings in Feb 2011 was still 15.5%.
