A facile hydrothermal method was developed to synthesize y-AlOOH nanorods, using AlCl3 and NH4OH as the reactants and H2SO4 as the morphology-directing agent. y-AlOOH nanorods with a length of about 1 μm, a diameter of 10-20 nm and a preferential growth along [100] direction were formed by mixing AlCl3 and NH4OH solutions at room temperature and the hydrothermal treatment of the precipitate in dilute H2SO4 solutions at 240 C for 16 hours. The increase of H2SO4/A1(OH)3 molar ratio from 0 to 0.05 was favorable for the occurrence of (H3O)A13(SO4)2(OH)6 intermediate and the formation of the y-AlOOH nanorods with high aspect ratio.
