A 4.8 kWP photovoltaic grid-connected system was set up in 2004 at the UFRGS Solar EnergyLaboratory. This system is composed by 48 modules with monocrystalline silicon cells, divided in 3 identical arraysof 16 modules that feed three single phase 1 kW nominal inverters. Each array is composed by two parallel strings of8 modules in series. Prior to the assembling of the PV arrays, each module was individually characterized. The PVsystem is being monitoring by an acquisition data unit connected to a computer, which registers several electric andclimatic data once in a minute, such as solar irradiance, ambient temperature, PV module temperature and DC andAC electric voltages and currents. The arrays are equipped with switches that allow the array to be modified from 16to 14 or 12 modules thus providing the possibility of different sizing factors of the inverters. This paper presents theinstallation of the system, the main energetic results including yearly averaged parameters and several systempeculiarities that are observable thanks to the detailed monitoring.
