Over recent years, it became clear that the bulk heterojunction concept based on organicmaterials offers a promising approach for the low-cost production of fully flexible photovoltaic modules.As such, it is believed that this type of organic solar cells can become an industrially feasible andeconomically viable alternative for the still market dominating bulk silicon solar cells, be it in general orin some more specific niche markets, like the fields of portable electronics or ambient intelligence. Still, itis clear that long-term dedicated efforts are needed in the further development of large scale, highthroughput processing technologies for this kind of devices. The aim of this paper is to present theapproach that is followed at IMEC for solution processing as well as gas phase deposition techniques inthe fabrication of organic solar cells. Recent achievements for both routes will be highlighted.
