Powdery mildew is one of the most important fungal diseases of hop (Humulus lupulus). In this genome analytical research molecular markers could be identified to support the time consuming and difficult work of hop resistance breeding without modifying the genome. By the AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphism) technique, a PCR based method, in addition with a special established leave infection test specific DNA-fingerprints could be detected associated with the presence of highly effective particular powdery mildew resistance genes from different wildhops. Using this markers the efficiency in selecting powdery mildew resistant seedlings can be increased. In addition a special differential display approach was performed to investigate the gene expression in hop seedlings to different time points after a powdery mildew infection. By this way resistant markers should be developed directly associated to genes responsible for the resistance reaction. First transcript derived fragments were found after different timepoints of infection.
