Twin 10 ft diameter drainage tunnels through an existing railroad embankment were required to alleviate the potential for flooding at 105 homes during a 100-year flood at Fossil Creek. The railroad embankment was constructed "over" an existing wood trestle by end dumping soil fill from the track. Tunneling challenges included the trestle bridge wood elements, loose to medium embankment fill and very loose to loose, saturated silt and silty sand a few feet below the embankment, and potential mixed-face of claystone bedrock and soil. Following subsurface explorations, tunnel invert elevations were raised to minimize the risk of mixed face and flowing ground conditions. In addition two, one-foot diameter steel pipes backfilled with concrete were constructed immediately below the "five and seven o'clock" positions of the 10 foot diameter drainage pipes using the Guided Boring Method (GBM) of construction. These steel pipes were designed to perform as "guide rails" for the drainage pipe. Finaly, geotechnical instrumentation of the railroad embankment was used to monitor for embankment and track settlement during construciton. The Contractor was pre-selected by the City of Fort Collins to provide a negotiated price contract for the work. The Contractor participated in the project during both the initial planning and then through the final design phases of the project and provided invaluable input on preferred construction means and methods. The GBM pipe "rails" were suggested by the Contractor as a means to mitigate potential "soft bottom" conditions during the main tunnel drives. An open shield with hydraulic digger was used with breasting tables and provisions to fully breast the face overnight between each single 10-hour shift per day.
