Girdling Induces Photoinhibition and Triggers Photoprotecting Mechanisms in Young Leaves from Vegetative Shoots

The effects of girdling on quantum yield efficiency of photosystem II (ΦPSII), total leaf carbohydrate content, oxidative damage and antioxidative response was monitored in young leaves from vegetative shoots of two-year old 'Loretina' mandarin. Thirty days after treatment, total leaf carbohydrate content increased by 100% in girdled trees. Concomitantly, aΦPSII reduction of light-adapted leaves and an increase of malonyldialdehyde (MDA) were quantified in girdled trees, suggesting a transient disruption of photosynthetic apparatus associated with oxidative damage. In response, an increase in total carotenoids, xanthophylls and xanthophyll cycle pool size was observed. Although girdling brought about changes in the de-epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle, no change was observed in energy-dependent non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). Thus,the role of carotenoids during oxidative stress is discussed. In conclusion, this study provides evidence that, although girdling increases final fruit set in Citrus, it can also induce photoinhibition, oxidative damage and changes in carotenoid content and composition in young leaves from vegetative shoots.
