Citropsis schweinfurthii (Engl.)Swing. & M. Kell. species, native to Africa, are considered to be surviving remote ancestors of Citrus. In a previous study, we reported the first-time production through an embryo culture of sexual intergeneric hybrids between the Citrus cultivar ' Nanpu' tangor and C. schweinfurthii. CMA chromosome banding for both parents and progenies was conducted to obtain cytogenetic information. The karyotype composition of C. schweinfurthii was very simple (14D + 4E) , while that of ' Nanpu' tangor had other, additional chromosome types (1A + 4C + 5D + 8E). Two progenies with C. schweinfurthii as the maternal parent showed 1A + 1C + 11D +5E both, suggesting that each one of the type A and C chromosomes were inherited from ' Nanpu' tangor. Thus, hybridism was proven at the chromosome level. However, the growth of these progenies showed serious weaknesses under greenhouse conditions. Interestingly, the vigor of the progenies with ' Nanpu' tangor as the maternal parent was obviously less than those with C. schweinfurthii as the maternal parent. This phenomenon might result from the interaction between the nucleus and cytoplasm. When these intergeneric hybrid progenies were grafted onto C. schweinfurthii, they showed vigorous growth.
