This article investigates if there are differences between traditional and Just-in-Time (JIT)companies in selecting benchmarking performance measures and to improve the effectiveness ofbenchmarking activities by reconciling possible inconsistencies in the process. A set of sixquestions was developed to examine the consistency of the decisions for traditional and JITcompanies. Statistical results indicate evidence of misalignment, inconsistencies, and lack ofconsensus at various levels of organization. These problems are more evident in traditionalcompanies than in JIT companies. Managerial implication of the result is that successful JITorganizations have a better understanding of organizational strategy, deployment of the strategyinto sub strategies, and selection of consistent benchmarking performance measures at variouslevels of organization.
