Energy has always been a scarce resource and the traditional fuel supply cannot scope with the growing demand of the aviation industry. On the top of this the planned emission restrictions are driving a change in the propulsion technology, that alternative energy sources are focused on to enable sustainable growth in aviation. As a result alternative energy sources are under investigation including but not limited to aviation bio fuel, usage of cryogenic liquefied gasses like LH2 and LNG or electricity. Most of the research is focused on the realization of the greener flight using alternative energy sources on board the airplane. There is only minor work available for the related ground organization, however cryogenic fuels have a high impact on the groundside as well. Thus this paper is first defining and positioning the alternative cryogenic green propulsion systems in order to compare and evaluate than the associated aviation infrastructure on the ground using concurrent engineering principles, discussing the associated hazards and delivering the upcoming infrastructure needs on ground in the airports.
