Undergraduate students in engineering and aviation sciences designed a 3D interactive virtual environment to simulate ongoing operations at a nearby regional airport on the east coast. The purpose of the project was to involve a multi-disciplined group of undergraduate researchers in a project that whose end goal would be a functional tool for airport managers to conduct elementary operations research onsite. By creating the model, airport managers will be able to simulate existing capacity which will assist in determining when operations are likely to exceed current airport capabilities. This paper covers the steps taken by the research group to build the 3D model in the FlexSim ? environment and other external resources available to customize the project. Future applications and projects are considered.
