For a long distance hydraulic transportation system the availability and reduction of operating costs of main line pump station is crucial. It is very important to ensure that the pumps show no unexpected downtime. For this reason a lot of attention is paid to preventive maintenance. State-of-the-art pump stations for long distance ore pipeline services are now equipped with piston diaphragm pumps. The diaphragm separates the medium from the moving parts in the pump such as pistons, cylinders and the stuffing box. The only moving parts which are exposed to the medium are the inlet and outlet check valves. The valves are the only moving pump parts that in direct contact with the slurry are subjected to wear. In order to further increase the availability and to reduce the costs of the piston diaphragm pumps, it is essential to monitor the condition of the valves closely. This will enable that no premature replacement is done and that valves are replaced before damage due to wear had occurred. At Samarco Mineracao, an automatic valve monitoring system has been successfully installed which monitors valve wear by means of acoustic signals. This paper will introduce this valve monitoring system and shows some results.
