For such three typical crossbeam web cutouts as round-ended shaped, U-shaped and V-shaped, geometries were assumed according to some practical projects respectively. Then the local stresses were analyzed along the free edges of the additional cutouts in the background of steel orthotropic deck with longitudinal trapezoidal ribs. Comparative studies were carried out on the basis of further five optimal proposals presented for each type of cutout hole. The results show that stresses are smooth in the middle part of the edge and concentrated in the top corner for the round-ended shaped cutout. A relatively reasonable dimension can be found by inserting transition arc with various radii. There exist local exorbitant stresses on the top edges of both U-shaped and Vshaped cutouts. After altering the beeline obliquity and curve type of the top edge, a relatively reasonable combination line shape can be gained. The optimal cutout, with large radius arc at the middle part and small radius arc in the top, can also be obtained through comparative analysis by increasing the top arc radiuses and decreasing the cutout depth. Some recent construction practices confirm the validity of the results.
