In the present contribution, the topic of laser induced damage will be outlined on the basis of selected fundamental damage mechanisms observed in thin films. Also, the standards for the measurement of laser induced damage thresholds ISO 11254 will be described. The second part of the paper will be dedicated to some aspects for improvements in the power handling capability including optimization strategies for the production processes, the materials and the design of optical coating systems. Finally, an outlook on research trends in laser induced damage of optical coatings will be given before the background of recent developments in laser technology.
