Investment Motivations of Multinational Enterprises and Knowledge Acquisition by Foreign Subsidiaries

Empirical examinations exploring key factors affecting knowledge acquisition in subsidiaries are substantially in the limelight, but our understanding of what accounts for its successful knowledge acquisition has yielded inconsistent and inconclusive results. We argue that the major reason for such conflicting results are probably derived from the fact that researchers have overlooked the investment motivations of multinational enterprises (MNEs) in foreign markets and learning patterns of subsidiaries can be influenced by whether foreign firms seek to develop new markets (i.e., market-seeking) or improve organizational efficiency (efficiency-seeking). By using a series of regression analyses, we uncover that absorptive capacity in learning organizations and long-term interactions with knowledge possessors in daily routine are essential prerequisites to facilitate learning from parent firms as well as active support from the parents is particularly crucial for subsidiaries seeking to improve operational efficiency for MNEs. Based on these findings, we suggest practical implications for management at MNEs and valuable future research avenues.
