Diversity of free-living and particle-attached acidophilic bacteria during bioleaching of waste printed circuit boards was investigated using 16S rRNA gene clone library analysis. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA genes showed that the bacteria community was mainly composed of Leptospirillum ferriphilum, Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus caldus, and the microbial populations at the early and later stage showed the similar profile. During the bioleaching process, Leptospirillum ferriphilum is the dominant species both in the solution and on the solids. Acidithiobacillus ferroxidans is only detected in the solution. Acidithiobacillus caldus is mainly found to be associated with the solids. The correlation of surface environment and physicochemical parameters during bioleaching correlated with bacterial community change were discussed.
