摘要

In an attempt to increase the awareness of global water scarcity and promote its mitigation by the development of small scale sustainable desalination units, Technische Universitat Munchen (TUM) organized the TUM DeSal Challenge. The task within the TUM DeSal Challenge was to develop a small scale desalination plant that operates by utilization of renewable energy. It was a competition structured as an educational and motivation campaign that provides practical experience for students and increases public awareness and consciousness about the world water problem. 14 student teams had to build up their own desalination units and were competing across 7 evaluation disciplines. This paper gives a comprehensive review of the developed desalination units, their operational principles and performance efficiencies. Due to the successful outcome of the competition another TUM DeSal Challenge of similar dimensions is planed for summer 2011.
