A Comparison of Virgin and Recycled Asphalt Pavements Using Long-Term Pavement Performance SPS-5 Data

The Specific Pavement Studies 5 (SPS-5) in the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP)program was designed to study the effects of overlay rehabilitation type on typical distressmeasures. The different rehabilitation treatments compared overlay thickness, overlay type, andsurface preparation prior to rehabilitation. The two thicknesses used were 50 mm and 125 mmoverlays. The two overlay types were virgin asphalt mix and recycled asphalt containingapproximately 30% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Surface preparation consisted of eithermilling or not milling the existing pavement prior to rehabilitation. Eighteen states andprovinces in North America built SPS-5 projects between 1989 and 1998. Seven distressparameters from these test pavements were analyzed, including International Roughness Index(IRI), rutting, fatigue cracking, longitudinal cracking, transverse cracking, block cracking, andraveling. Analyses were conducted to determine which factors affected overlay performance asmeasured with the above parameters. Further statistical testing compared the performance of thevirgin mix sections directly to equivalent sections containing 30% RAP. Overlays with mixescontaining 30 percent RAP were found to perform as well as overlays with virgin mixes in termsof IRI, rutting, block cracking, and raveling. It was also determined that thicker overlaysimproved pavement performance except for rutting, and milling prior to rehabilitation decreasedIRI, fatigue cracking, and transverse cracking but increased rutting.
