Computer self-efficacy plays an important role in the acceptance and use of new information technology. However, little is known about the antecedents of computer self-efficacy. This research proposes a model to probe into which factors affect university students' computer self-efficacy. The model is empirically tested using an online questionnaire survey. The research results indicate that encouragement, anxiety, openness and agreeableness are significant antecedents of computer self-efficacy. Taking gender into account, our research results show that agreeableness is significantly related to computer self-efficacy for female but not for male, and that openness is significantly related to computer self-efficacy for male but not for female. Interestingly, encouragement has a more significantly positive effect on computer self-efficacy for male students than for female ones.
