In solution AFM observation of tilapia scale collagen was performed to prove its rapid fibril formation with high flexibility compared to porcine collagen. The time course observation of initial rapid adhesion of hMSCs on the tilapia collagen also supports their flexibility by AFM results. Fibril formation degree markedly affects the osteoblastic differentiation of the hMSCs. These results suggest that these morphological and mechanical characters of fibrous tilapia scale collagen facilitate the early stage of osteoblastic differentiation in hMSCs.
