Partial energy loss due to soiling, especially in climates where rainfall is rare, is one of most importantenergy loss factors that can be influenced by the operator during the life of a PV plant. Snow cover can be seen as aspecial case of soiling applicable in regions with colder climate. The PV power production for Murcia in Spain,Munich in Germany and Stockholm in Sweden has been modeled by PVsyst for a 1 MW plant with fixed tilt angleand with 2-axis tracking. A break-even analysis between share of one year's energy loss due to soiling and cleaningcost was conducted for the different locations. As basis for the evaluation industrial or spot prices for electricity wereused. An economical benefit of cleaning can be seen in Murcia, maybe in Munich, but probably not in Stockholmassuming a cleaning cost of €2500/MW and assuming industrial electricity price. With a spot electricity price it isprobably only in Murcia a revenue benefit of cleaning can be seen. It is unlikely that there is an economical benefit toremove snow from a PV plant in Stockholm assuming a snow removal cost in the same order as for soil cleaning.
