Air bearing spindles are not standard items on commercially available cylindrical grinders, but they are useful for achieving single digit micro-inch roundness and straightness accuracies. Since our early days, Professional Instruments Co has retrofit our spindles on to vintage hand fed machine tools, but recently we have started buying new CNC machines without any spindles installed. This work describes one of those projects.
