PERFORMANCE OF SUGARCANE GENOTYPES IN THE EAST COAST ZONE UNDER VARIED LEVELS OF NITROGEN

Field experiments were carried out at Sugarcane Research Station, Cuddalore during 2007-2010 cropping seasons of spring and autumn to evaluate the performance of sugarcane genotypes under different levels of nitrogen fertilization in terms of higher cane yield and sugar recovery. Irrespective of the cropping seasons (Spring and Autumn) the standard CoC 23 significantly recorded the maximum tiller (1,85,400 ha~(-1) and 1,77,600 ha~(-1)), millable cane population (1,32,700 ha1 and 1,27,200 ha~(-1)) and on par with genotype CoV 03-101. The genotype CoV 03-101 significantly registered individual cane weight (1.42 kg and 1.39 kg), maximum cane yield (131.8 and 127.5 t ha~(-1)) and Sugar yield (15.1 and 14.8 t ha~(-1)) in the respective of seasons. Among the levels of nitrogen, the prescription of 125 per cent (344 kg ha~(-1)) of the recommended dose of N significantly registered higher values of yield components, cane and sugar yield compared to 75 and 100 per cent of recommended dose of nitrogen which recorded tillers (1,69,600 ha~(-1) and 1,63,000 ha~(-1)), millable cane population (1,23,800 ha~(-1) and 1,19,100 ha~(-1)), individual cane weight (1.32 kg and 1.27 kg), cane yield (127.1 t ha~(-1) and 123.0 t ha~(-1)) and sugar yield (14.6 t ha~(-1) and 13.8 t ha~(-1)) in the respective seasons.
