The Regional Transportation District (RTD) in Denver has since 2000 operated general public demandresponsive transportation (DRT). Branded as Call-n-Ride (CnR), this DRT service is operated in 20service areas in a variety of settings throughout the RTD district. CnR was developed to servecommunities that are difficult to serve cost-effectively with bus service due to their low to moderateresidential and employment densities, circuitous street networks and dispersed geographic and temporaltravel patterns, but which have sufficient demand to warrant by policy a community service or connectionto the metropolitan transit network. The CnR service is characterized by a range of DRT serviceconfigurations, incorporating many to many services, scheduled checkpoints, zones and flex-routesspecifically tailored to the topography and travel patterns of each service area. Based on an analysis ofdata obtained primarily from CnR's automated scheduling system, this paper provides insights into theoperations of such DRT services for the general public that may assist others in assessing its feasibilityfor implementation in other metropolitan areas.
