To implement photovoltaic (PV) electricity systems on a large scale, development of PV system are needed and the costs of the PV systems must be further reduced. We have developed a highly reliable quantitative methodology for wide range of PV technology. To analyze the manufacturing cost structure, we designed and evaluated manufacturing processes. We aggregated the costs of equipment, labor, raw materials, and utilities required to manufacture each type of PV system. This paper examines PV-cell technologies, considering the cost reduction of PV systems as technology develops and the results of development on the cost structures for various solar cells. To estimate cost reduction, in addition to examining the formation of thin Si wafers, we must also examine high-efficiency tandem wafers. Moreover, in creating our technological scenarios, we examine the deposition rate for thin-film compounds, perovskite, and organic matter and estimate that the rate will reach 30% module efficiency for high-efficiency multijunction types. Therefore, it will be possible to reduce Si-based PV system costs to below US$0.50-0.60/W_p. This approach enabled us to analyze the cost-reduction potential of each PV-cell technology.
