摘要

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, it is estimated that by 2030, there will be more than 70 million persons 65 years and older in the U.S., which is expected to be approximately 19% of the population by then. When admitted to a hospital, older patients usually have more than one comorbid conditions in addition to their primary diagnoses. The objective of this research is to investigate the relationship between comorbidities and hospital stays for diabetes patients using the 2006 National Inpatient Sample data. Statistical control charts were built to identify secondary diseases and secondary procedures that may result in extended length of stay and increased total charges for patients of age 65 and older who were admitted with a primary diagnosis of diabetes. Statistical hypothesis tests were further performed to compare between different patient groups.
