摘要

World Health Organization's statistics indicate that Stroke is major cause of chronic impairment and disability. Residual walking disability after stroke is common in 40% and may lead to increased fall risk, reduced mobility, reduced aerobic fitness and quality of life. To retrain ambulation, we collaborated with clinicians to develop a special treadmill (VAAST) with multiple sensors, and a suspension harness to protect stroke trainees from fall injuries. VAAST overcomes the limitations and risks of standard treadmills as it automatically adapts to the demonstrated ability of the trainee. This allows the therapist to individually customize gait re-training to each stroke patient so as to maximize recovery. VASST was researched and developed over a period of 18 months with a $350,000 grant from the Singapore Ministry of Education. Our clinical collaborators from the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, recently completed a pilot clinical trial for 10 chronic ambulatory stroke patients, which yielded encouraging short-term clinical outcomes pertaining to walking endurance, speed and balance. This paper will present the key features of the treadmill and discuss the key findings of the clinical trial.
