摘要

The paper reviews the pros and cons of foreign ownership of airlines from an investor's as well as from the government's perspective. An overview of foreign investment on European airlines is provided, presenting also some publicly available information on their financial and operational development. For airlines with Non-EU shareholders the effects on their networks is described, illustrating that connections to the investor's hub are strengthened whereas direct flights to destinations which are also offered as transfer flights via the investor's hub have only been ceased in one rather exceptional case. It is shown that the home country of a smaller 'flag carrier' with a foreign investor often benefits, whereas the large European airline groups are put under increasing competitive pressure.
