One of main issues in clinical use of covered self-expandable biliary metal stent is a biofilm formation on the surface of polymeric covered membranes which lead to cholangitis and stent obstruction.Anti-biofilm formation is needed to prolong stent patency and reduce adverse events. This experimental study aimed to estimate the efficacy of anti-biofilm covered self-expandable metal stent in porcine model.Following deployment of test and control stent during 8 weeks in biliary dilatation model, the extents of biofilm formation and histopathological difference were estimated. In our in vivo study, silver particle integrated covering self-expandable metal stent reduced biofilm formation and stent-related pathological tissue changes compared with conventional covering self-expandable metal stent.
