The paper presents the design of a hyperconducting double-rotor permanent magnet synchronous machine for high torque applications by fulfilling the mechanical requirements of an all-electric helicopter. The aim to design a rotating electrical machine with high gravimetric power density goes along with different technologies, presented in the survey of this paper. Nevertheless, the usage of a promising technology is no guaranty for an optimal solution. Therefore, based on hyperconductive material, this paper discusses the challenges and investigates different design methods to come up with a final design strategy. Hence, an overview is given on how to design a hyperconductive machine, combining air windings, Halbach arrays, a double-rotor configuration and an end-winding cooling fed by liquid hydrogen.
