Relating Moisture Content, Suction and Shear Strength of an Ore

Ores are highly valuable product of mining. The finer fractions of an ore become sticky when moist causing problems during their transportation, e.g., adherence to an ore pass wall. This paper shows in a mechanistic way how the moisture gives rise to a suction and an elevation of shear strength. Methods and concepts of unsaturated soil mechanics are adopted. The fractal properties of the ore's particle and pore size distributions are accounted for. Results of triaxial compression tests conducted on an ore at a range of moisture contents are interpreted using the effective stress framework and the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. Relationships between suction, moisture content, void ratio, and strength are then derived which may be used by practitioners when dealing with ores and other fractal geomaterials.
