Identification of congestion bottleneck is the prerequisite and basis for urban traffic congestion management. In this paper, a new cellular automaton model for urban two-way-six-lane network systems with no signal control intersections is proposed to investigate the problem of congestion bottleneck identification in urban road networks. The traffic demand factor and network speed are employed to study the relationship between traffic demands and bottleneck formation. Furthermore, the process of bottleneck increase and the distribution in the network are presented and discussed.
